News of the World is no more— 08/07/11

It was announced yesterday that the News of the World is to release it's final edition this Sunday, following News International's decision to close the title.

The controversial red-top had been embroiled in a scandal involving phone-hacking for several years, which reached tipping point earlier this week after fresh allegations linked editorial staff with tapping the phones of 7/7 victims' families, among others.

The News of the World is one of Britain's oldest national newspapers, having launched in 1843. It quickly became the highest-selling Sunday newspaper in the country, and at the time of its closure, it is Britain's most widely-read newspaper.

News of the decision to axe the News of the World has been greeted with cynicism from many corners, with the feeling that it could purely be an act of damage limitation in the build-up to - News International owner - Rupert Murdoch's takeover of BSkyB. It has also been announced that 'Sunday Sun' has been registered as a domain name.

There is still much speculation over what will be the exact fate of News International's Rebekah Brooks, while Andy Coulson, News of the World editor from 2003-2007, is being held in police custody following his arrest this morning.

No advertising will appear in the final edition of the News of the World, it will purely carry promotion for national charity organisations.
